Despite its name, General Surgery is a specialty that focuses on surgical treatment of abdominal organs, e.g. intestines including esophagus, stomach, colon, liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, hernias and often the thyroid gland.

Thoracic Surgery is surgical treatment of diseases that affect organs inside the thorax (the chest).  Included with these would be tumors and diseases of the trachea, lung, mediastinum, diaphragm, and esophagus including reflux and its complications.

Oncologic surgery involving organs of the abdomen or chest are often performed collaboratively with other specialists such as a gynecologist or a urologist.  In the case of breast cancer, surgery is much less radical than in the past and many involve a plastic surgeon depending on the needs and preferences of the patient.

Laparoscopic Surgery, a minimally invasive method of surgery using a laparoscope inserted through a very small (approximately one inch) incision, is an option in some surgical cases.  This results in a much shorter recovery period than open abdominal surgery.

Vascular Surgery includes surgical interventions concerning the arteries and veins, as well as conservative therapies for diseases of the peripheral vascular system.  Surgeries include treatment for abdominal aortic aneurysm, vascular bypass grafts as well as varicose veins.  This should not be confused with surgeries of the heart, which are performed by cardio-thoracic surgeons.

Vascular Surgery

Surgical Critical Care (SCC) involves services for critically ill, injured or high-risk surgical patients. Rounds are done each morning on all patients and this is a time for the physicians, nurses, respiratory therapist, dietitian and pharmacist to discuss the best plan of care for the patient.

The surgeons of Surgical Specialists of the Rockies are on-call at all times for trauma patients coming to Poudre Valley Hospital.  This means that one of our surgeons is present for the arrival of all levels of trauma so that life-saving surgical intervention is implemented as quickly as needs are assessed.
